Facebook Photos Lead to Disability Benefits Termination
October 23, 2010 | Disability Claim Denials, Filing Disability ClaimsThe Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (“CBC”) reports that Nathalie Blanchard, an IBM worker who had been on long-term disability leave due to depression, had her benefit payments terminated after she posted photos on social networking site Facebook that showed her on vacation, having a great time at Chippendale’s and celebrating at her birthday party. Manulife, her insurer, has confirmed that it uses Facebook as an investigation tool for looking into the activities of its insureds. Ms. Blanchard contends that her doctor suggested to her that she engage in fun activities to ward off depression. The story is a reminder to insureds to be vigilant when it comes to surveillance by insurance companies. The CBC’s full article can be read here: Depressed Woman Loses Benefits Over Facebook Photos .
